Yerington Monday: Baseball in Yerington

Yerington Monday:  Baseball in Yerington

Yerington is crazy about baseball.  They have five baseball fields in this little town.  They even had one major League player, Larry K. Tingle, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers 1967-1969..  Larry was in the 1967 graduating class of Yerington High School and sadly passed away April 15, 2013.  All of the fields are named in honor of Yerington residents who were active or instrumental in baseball. To learn more about each field and who they were named after, click each picture.

Although I was neither active or instrumental in Yerington’s baseball history, I do have a story about my Yerington baseball experience, “Baseball and Mosquitoes” on my blog for those who are interested.

Pat Peeples Softball Field is the city's major softball field. It has a new lighting system that was just installed in June of 2011. This field host numerous tournaments throughout the year for girls softball, soccer and  is used for summer co-ed league play. The Spirit of Wovoka event is also held at this field annually.
Pat Peeples was the world champion fastpitch softball pitcher in the late 40’s and early 50’s.  When he retired from baseball, he moved to Yerington and had a family.   Then he lost a leg  in a farming accident.  He still pitched for fun with his prosthesis and was still good.  He was Bonnie Johnson’s  first pitching coach.  She went on to pitch pro in San Jose.

Buck Aiazzi Field is complete with lights, a concession stand and plenty of parking.  Gerald (Buck) Aiazzi was one of our classmates who was an outstanding Little League player and was killed in an auto collision in July 1962.

Booth Parr Baseball Field is the home of the Yerington High School Lions and also is used for the Babe Ruth league and also doubles as a soccer field during the season. The field just had an electrical upgrade, complete with timers for night games.   Joe Parr (County Clerk) & Frank Booth worked  tirelessly on this baseball field and the Pat Peeple’s softball field.

Reviglio Little League Field is located on the corner of Joe Parr Ave and Oregon street. it is Yerington’s newest ball field.  It is also used for softball and soccer.

Neil Herrin Field is a multi-use field.  It can be adapted for baseball or softball and is also used for youth soccer.
