Yerington Monday: LVN Nursing School

In the new hospital, my mother started a LVN nursing school. Here are some of the LVN's. I remember so many of their faces, but cannot remember their names. Can you "Yeringtonites" help me out?

• Sylvia Banta I think the person in the bottom photo second from the left in back was Mrs. Carr and later Mrs. Hamilton. I believe she was Marvin Carr's mom. He was the Yerington Fire Chief at one time.

• Liz Merrill Mason Beverly Lang's mom, Linda Gores, Kathy Rosachi, and of course our favorite, Betty Bryant who was head nurse on day shift. I never worked swing shift because I was a senior and had to take civics night class with Mr. Mayeroff.

• Liz Merrill Mason Oh and I'm pretty sure that is Mrs. Carr. She was such a sweet lady. Actually I think the bottom photo was of the class the year before mine as I recognize all of their faces. The one I thought was Susan Helferts sister is not. She was from Smith valley and was engaged to a man who worked on Dr. Mary’s ranch. I think her last name might have been Jordan. She was very tall. Close to 6 feet tall. Very quiet and sweet. I wish I could remember names as well as details about them. The names are there on the tip of my tongue.

• Chere Brown Mary, I think Liz was just talking about some of the people she knew at the hospital, but not necessarily in the pictures. How about you, can you help me identify some of those nurses?

• Liz Merrill Mason Yes, I was speaking of those I could remember. None are in these photos. I always admired Mrs. Rippee for her tenacity. She could barely walk and she was constantly in pain but she never complained and was always working. I asked her one time why she didn't sit and put her feet up and let us younger girls do the hard stuff and she said if she stopped she wouldn't get up again.

• Liz Merrill Mason Have you read the book about Dr. Mary by Dixie westergard? I bought it on amazon for Christmas for my mom last year. She absolutely loved Dr Mary. My grandmother who was a nurse in bishop Calif knew Dr Mary when they were both doing their training in San Francisco long before my dad was born. They kept in touch off and on over the years. In fact, Mr Fulstone knew my grandpa and family quite well. My grandpas family lived in a cabin on the Truckee. My grandma always said he was related to the guy who built a toll bridge where Reno is today but she said the family had disowned him because he was a mean SOB. Hehe

• Chere Brown Yes, I loved and admired Mrs. Rippee as did my mother. When she could no longer handle the floor as a nurse, my mother trained her in the office. They remained friends until my mother's death. When she moved to the Dr. Mary's Wing, I went to see her on a visit home. She still had the same great attitude.

• Chere Brown Yes, I have the book about Dr. Mary. It was interesting. Dr. Mary was a strong supporter of my mother from the start of her career as Yerington's hospital administrator. My mother also trained as a nurse in San Francisco. Who did not love Dr. Mary? I have never heard anyone speak bad about her.

• Liz Merrill Mason Thank you Linda. It is carol joyner not Jordan. That bottom photo would be the class of '65 since Susan Geotsch is not in it. Susan was in class of '66 and Mrs. Lang, Linda Torres and I were in class of '67. Our instructor Mrs. Mccarthy died just before our class graduated and an rn from the hospital took over. A Mrs. Davidson.

• Mary Burns I am certain Dee Ann told me her 90 Plus yr old Grandma DR Mary, delivered one last baby before she retired, and it was Dee Ann’s daughter Dr Mary's granddaughter ( and she is now a practicing attorney somewhere ) HOw cool is that , to retire that way??

• Chere Brown Dr. Mary was such a gracious person. One time she gave us all a ride to Reno to see my grandmother, because my mom's car was broken down. All four of us kids sat in the backseat as Dr. Mary & my mom visited. My brother's, out of boredom, took a lead pencil and poked holes in the ceiling material in her new Cadillac. When my mother looked to the backseat to check on us, she was horrified to see what her "little darlings" had done. I sat dead silent, because I did not expect my mother or my brothers to live; and I was afraid to die so young. But Dr. Mary remained so calm and said "Now, Clara, it's OK. Kids do the darnedest things." My mom offered repeatedly to pay for the damage, but Dr. Mary would not hear of it.

• Mary Burns Dr Mary made house calls, and I still recall the kettle boiling her needle to sterilize it , bro Joe locked himself in the bathroom , cuz he didn't want a shot, Dr Mary told JOe , thru the bathroom door she was getting a ladder to climb in the window after him.. She then asked our Mom where a ladder was, at which point, bro Joe came running out of the bathroom... BUSTED and he got his shot in the butt like the rest of us What a Saint she was and so patient with pains in the ass patients HI BRO JOE, LOVE YA heee

• Liz Merrill Mason Your mom would have Dr Mary come give all of us shots at the hospitals expense. No matter where we were wed see her coming with a needle at us with a polite "bend over please". I swear I got at least 3 flu shots that year. The staff was always well looked after. When I passed out during morning report, your mom had me on a gurney and the surgery line up that day was waylaid till after my appendectomy. I had no idea your mom was a nurse so I was quite shocked when she scrubbed in as my surgical nurse (who normally would have been Mrs. Bryant) . I felt very special.

Chere Brown Liz, my mother was head surgical nurse at both Washoe Medical Center & St. Mary's before she ever came to Yerington. When I had my appendix out she didn't scrub, but insisted on being in the operating room with me. Dr. Mary didn't have to give us our shots, because my mother would come home with the vaccines and give us all a shot, including herself. I cried every time anyone got a shot.
