Monday 16, 2015 Lake Tahoe to Yerington
Left Lake Tahoe after 1 pm. Drove down the grade to Carson City. I took the route through Gardnerville, Smith Valley and then on to Yerington. The roads were still a little icy in places. I was glad to see that the Walker River in Wilson Canyon had some water in it after the drought, even though it looks like a small stream instead of a roaring river now.
View of Carson Valley from the grade.
In Smith Valley, I stopped by Beverly Brown’s old 5 acre farm. Beverly was my daughter Shannon’s grandmother. We spent many a pleasant visit on this little farm over the years. I have been trying to find out about Beverly ever since my daughter died in 2009. That was the last time I talked with her. I have tried to find out about her on visits home but to no avail. I do not know if she is in a nursing home or dead. I am really heartbroken that I cannot find out. If anyone reading this posts knows anything about her, please let me know. I would be eternally grateful.
The barn and out buildings on Beverly Brown’s farm on River Street in Smith, Valley.
From Smith Valley, after Wilson Canyon, I took the long route to Yerington through the farm lands of Mason Valley. It is such a beautiful valley. Finally at dusk I reach my motel. Staying at the Copper Inn all week.
This is my room at the Copper Inn - Room 8. If you cannot make it on Friday to the Facebook Meetup and want to stop by the motel, I am giving you an open invitation. Room 8 in in the back.
Decided to check out the new Pioneer Crossing Casino. Had a good french dip sandwich and on my way out decided to play some penny slots. I was thinking maybe I can win enough to pay for my dinner which was $10 with tip. After ten minutes of playing I won $70. Yahoo! Thank you Pioneer Crossing.

Breakfast at Rosie’s Place
Had breakfast at Rosie’s Place #2. Had a great plate of chorizo and eggs.
Rosie’s Place #2 interior
Juan Verdugo, owner of Rosie’s Place. Juan told me that he also owned Rosie’s Place No 1 in Smith Valley. He said that when he first started his restaurant his wife Rosie wasn’t interested in it until he named it after her. Now he says she loves it. Juan is a Smith Valley High School graduate and was raised on the Hunewell ranch in Smith Valley.

Lyon County Library
Stopped at the Lyon County Library to do some research. They have microfilm of the Mason Valley News & other newspapers back to the mid-1800’s. My problem was I could not get the microfilm machine to work right. May try again tomorrow.
Stopped by Lyon County Museum by they were closed. Their hours are Thurs & Fri from 1pm-4pm. I will definitely go back Thursday afternoon.
There was a large mural on a building by the Museum. When I was a kid, this building was the Seventh Adventist Church.

Dini’s Lucky Club
Told George Dini about our Friday Facebook Meetup. He said he could accommodate us.
Today is Yerington Facebook Meetup
To accommodate everyone's schedules and since I am diabetic and need to eat at regular times, I have decided to spread this MeetUp over the entire day. Hopeful this will make it possible for more of my Facebook friends to gather together so I can get to know you better. Here is the tentative schedule. Please let me know if this will work for y’all. And pray we don’t get snowed out. If none of these work, I will be staying at the Copper Inn (Mon-Fri). Just drop by and say “Hi”.

If any of you locals would be interested, please let me know and where we could meet and what times would be best. I was thinking maybe brunch at Dini’s on Friday, but I am open. I have some Facebook friends in Yerington that I have never met face to face and would love to connect with them.

Had a pleasant visit at my hotel room with Gail Kendall. Gail is the historian for the South Lyon Health Center Ladies Auxiliary. We have only been Facebook friends for a few months, but after our meeting I feel like we have been friends for a long time. She invited me to the hospital’s Ladies Auxiliary's luncheon tomorrow which I agreed to attend. I am hoping to see some old faces from the days when my mother was hospital administrator.
Linda Edwards came by around 1:30 pm. She acted as my chauffeur driving me around to take pictures for future Yerington Monday posts. Afterwards we went to her house for a great visit and catch up time. Thanks Linda. The first picture above is Linda and me in Chorus, (first row on right Linda with me next to her, 1965). The second picture is me with Linda, little Troy, & Richard Tooley during a Long Beach, CA visit in 1968. Believe it or not, I was 7 months pregnant. Linda is one of my “first friends” as we went to school from the 1-12 grades.
Most of the day I had to push. I think this trip to Yerington finally wore me down a little, so didn’t do much today. “My spirit was willing, but my flesh was a little week.” I have good days and bad days - this was not my best. Please help me pray for a good day on Friday’s Meetup, I really, really, really want this to be a great day for everyone!

Attended a South Lyon Hospital auxiliary luncheon at the Catholic Recreational Center at noon. My mother, Clara Barnett, was always appreciated of the auxiliary when she was hospital administrator and was honored for the invitation. They run blood drives and raise funds for equipment for the hospital that are not in the budget.
My host, Gail Kendall, introduced me to many people including some retired teachers who had taught my sister, Lexie, and my brother, David.
Center piece at our table. A turkey made out of fruit and vegetables.
Head table. Reading of the minutes
Senior dance group was our entertainment. The senior can really move. I enjoyed their performance.
Drove my our old home at 111 West Street. It looks a lot better now than when we lived in it, as it has been remodeled and landscaped.
Went to the Lyon County Museum which is only open on Thursdays & Fridays between 1-4 pm after I left the luncheon.
Went to the Lyon County Museum which is only open on Thursdays & Fridays between 1-4 pm after I left the luncheon. After exploring the Fire Dept & Dr. Mary Exhibits, I was spent. Spent the rest of my time in an antique rocking chair visiting with these two lovely ladies. Pat Harper and Linda LaPierre are volunteers. I feel like I have made a couple of new friends. Linda is quite a historian so you know I had to pick her brain. Pat is the cashier and a lot of fun. Will definitely go back the next time I am in Yerington.

Yerington Facebook Meetup Day
All three meetups were small, but altogether enjoyable. It gave me/us more time to get to know each other and have more one-on-one time. Only problem was that I came down with a terrible cold and probably infected everyone I came in contact with. My apologies Facebook Meetup friends.
Linda Edwards and Charlene Marc
Dini’s Lucky Club Meetup
I can’t say enough about Linda Carey Edwards. She was my partner in crime through this whole Facebook Meetup adventure. We attended class together from 1st to 12th grade. She is truly a “first friend”. She attended every meetup on Friday. We spent time and meals together everyday I was in Yerington at her expense. May the Lord bless her for her generosity towards me.
I had not seen Charlene Marc since she graduated a year ahead of me in 1965. It was wonderful catching up on her life. I was so glad she popped in.
Chuck Grooms and Leanna Ogle
Dini’s Lucky Club Meetup
Chuck came all the way from Floriston, California which is a small town on the Nevada-California border. He is the brother of one of my classmates of YHS 1966 graduation class, Sharon Grooms. As kids we lived just a block from each other. Leanna is a multi-gifted lady who has had several careers in her short life. Currently she is working at the South Lyon Health Center as a RN. Before that she was a teacher and a firefighter. Anyone who has read her posts knows she is also a gifted writer as well. I believe she will be a guest writer for Yerington Mondays soon.
I really enjoyed my visit with Chuck and Leanna. I also appreciate their sacrifice. Chuck having drove so far for such an early morning meetup and Leanna had just come off a 12 hour shift at the hospital.
YTA Cafe Meetup
We had our little meetup behind those black curtains. In attendance were Linda Edwards, Chuck Grooms, Nikki Newell Bryan and myself. We took a tour of the theater where Hila Plitmann (Eric Whitacre’s wife), world renowned opera singer, will be performing on Dec.23. Oh, how I wish I could be there, but unfortunately I return to Fort Worth on Dec 12.
Me and Nikki Newell Bryan
Really enjoyed getting to know Nikki. Another amazing friend on Facebook. She has worked for Lyon County since 1988 and has been in the elected position of Clerk/Treasurer for Lyon County since January 1999. I love Nikki’s posts and I am so glad we are friends. She bought us lunch. Thanks Nikki.
Unfortunately, I began to feel sick with a fever while here and did not realize at the time that I was coming down with the cold from hell. I hope Nikki, Linda or Chuck did not catch it.
Tailgaters Meetup
Karen and James Bull joined us at Tailgaters for Dinner. They are self employed in the broadcasting equipment business. James is from Fort Smith Arkansas.
I was feeling terrible by the Tailgate Meetup, but enjoyed visiting with this lovely couple. Hope you did not get my cold, Kanen and Jim.
Dennis and Leah Compston
Tailgaters Meetup
Towards the end of the meet up, Dennis and Leah Compston came in with the Volunteer Fire Dept group. They were seated at the table right next to ours so Leah and I were able to visit and kill the proverbial “two birds with one stone”. Wish we could have had more time but over all it was a pleasant if not short visit. I believe Dennis and Leah are cousins to Robin Barnett, my sister in law.

Karen Dodd and myself at Dini’s
Had an 8:30 breakfast with Karen Dodd before checking out of the Copper Inn Motel. Karen is another fascinating person who lived part of her life on a sailboat with her husband and is an seasoned scuba diver. We were high school classmates as well. I really enjoyed getting reconnected despite the fact that my cold was increasing in intensity.
Mary Burns at her home in Gardnerville. Mary “Bunz” Burns is a real Nevada history buff. We visited in her “Nevada” family room. She was generous enough to lend me 64 old magazine on Nevada hoping it would help on my Yerington Monday posts. I was suppose to meet with her in Gardnerville at 11 am, but I was so weak from my cold it took me an hour and a half to load my car. Arrived around 1:30 pm. Was glad to hear that she would be retiring as of Dec 26 and take to traveling the back roads. She has been an x-ray technician for over 30 years specializing in mammograms. Mary is a “first friend” who I gave a blood nose when we were about 8-9 years old, but she had such a great sense of humor, we remained friends after our very short Mighty Might boxing match.
