Yerington Monday: Yerington Grammar School
Yerington Grammar School (where I attended 1st through 5th grade) has an interesting history and is now a Cultural Center. Many fun memories and playground experiences,
Grammar School No. 9 Historic Photo. Not sure of the date, but it could possibly be right after the school was completed.
Construction Grammar School No 9 Yerington Grammar School No 9 was designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival Style in 1912 and was designed by renowned Nevada architect Frederic Joseph Delongchamps. The school was constructed for $16,000. And was large enough to educate 100 children. The schoolhouse was vacated for larger school facilities in 1980. Many of Yerington's residents attended the Grammar School No 9 including Nevada State Assembly Speaker Emeritus, Joe Dini.

- Robin Barnett 5th grade. Mr. Mazzono. My classroom was on the second floor the windows on the right. Good and not so god memories.
- Chere Brown Mrs. Britt 4th grade to the backside. She brought in some horny toads and put them in an antiquarian. She then told us to go to the playground and collect ants to feed the horny toads. In our excitement, we drop all of our ants on the heads of the toads and to ours & Mrs. Britt's horror the ants ate their eyes out. Ya! Great memories.
- Deirdre Pederson I had Mr. Maisano too! After being in his class I had a different view of circles.
- Chere Brown Remember when some teachers would draw a circle on the blackboard, and you had to stand on your toes with your nose in the circle? Or when they put your gum on your nose and made you stand in front of the class, as punishment for chewing gum in class? What was with our teachers and noses?
- Timothy McGowan I had first grade in this building. Mrs, Julian. Second, third and fourth were in the annex across the yard to the south. Can't remember off-hand my second grade teachers name, but she was meaner than a junk-yard dog. Third grade was Mrs. Whitaker, to whom I owe a dept of gratitude for taking the time to teach me to read, this task having been somewhat neglected in the first two grades. Fourth grade was, If memory serves, Mrs. Fabri, or Mrs. Bailey. I seem to remember my folks saying she had married/divorced about this time. Can't remember which. Returned to the old grammar school in 5th grade. Mrs. Carey. The annex left something to be desired. There were doors that opened to the south but no stairs so they could not be used. In my second (?) grade room, part of the floor on the threshold had deteriorated and there was a gap you could throw a cat through under the door. Of course, I would never mistreat a cat like that!
- Linda Edwards MY teachers were MRS. Hite, my very favorite teacher second grade, Mrs.Longero fifth grade...and Mrs.Carey
- Deirdre Pederson Mrs. Hite was my favorite teachers too!! So kind.
- Mary Burns My Mom, Frances Millar, at the time ,taught 2nd grade on the ground floor on the Right some of her students were Dino R Eddie Snyder, Louie Menesini (who taught her all the swear words) Moms words..... and the Masini girls (Pat Scatena , Mrs Red PUrsel, and Pauline Mathews) Mom taught 2nd grade but when she married Dad, she could no longer teach, as teachers couldn’t be married!! And Tim, maybe your 2nd grade teacher was Mrs Hayden, she at first scared me, too, but I really liked her soon... Mrs McGowan, my first grade teacher had me reading as did Mrs Hayden in second grade(along with my Mother before we started school) and Phyliss and Jake Longero are husband wife I had Mrs Carey for 5th grade on the second floor, , and recall the shiny hardwood floors... when our class entered 6th grade , the INtermediate school just opened so we had 6, 7 and 8 grade classes in the new school mb
- Nikki Newell Bryan Mary, your mom taught my dad too. I know he thought she was pretty special. I am guessing that Louie didn't teach her all the swear words because I'm sure she learned some of them from my dad. ;-P
- Mary Burns You are so right, Nick, My Momma did INDEED teach Jimmy She just loved her 'cute little second graders' thank you so much, Nicki ,for your kind words luvyurgutzmary
- Sharon Hall Provost-Brown It's really amazing to look at these photos and know that my mother, my uncle, me and most of my siblings and friends attended school there.
- Dawnette Kelley I had Mrs McGowan, Mrs Hayden, Mrs Ostrander, Mrs Hunt and Miss Schmaling in 5th grade. I remember also mr Clark the principle and Helen Spence his secretary:-) I spent a bit of time in the principle’s office:-/ I kicked me Clark in the chins in Mrs Hayden's class:-( I hid in the coat closet. Do you remember the closets ran the length of the wall with several doors. When he finally opened the right door (that was scary) I kicked him. I must have been a real terror lol
- Mary Burns Dawnette, you kicked Mr Clark? YIKES! and they called ME a terror, !! actually, you were ahead of me by a coupla yrs !! but NEVER did I kick a principal, or teacher for that matter.! I had good times and a good education in the Yer. school system
- Dawnette Kelley Also. Remember that big levy looking burm that we used to walk on as we went to the old high school gym/cafeteria for lunch? Well, in the second grade with Mrs Hayden, I somehow got left behind at the cafeteria (I must have used the bathroom& didn't come out in time). Several kids were watching out the window n Mrs Hayden was at the big double doors yelling my name to hurry up n get in here!(I was probably kicking rocks lol). I was so scared that I took off running and ran all the way to the telephone office where my mom worked. Well my mom was plugged into the switchboard saying "I haven't seen her, I'll be right over." I hid behind the door and she went out looking for me. YHEE GADS was I ever in trouble for that one!! Had to stay after school and catch the HS bus home. Got on the wrong bus didn't get to Weed Heights commissary until dark (like 5:00 this time of year) I was so scared! Traumatized big time!
- Chere Brown Boy, Dawnette. When people tell you "it can't get much worst", you can experimentally say, Oh, yes it can!" Loved your story. It made me want to laugh and to cry all at once.
I had Mr. Maisano as a teacher in 1960 and still feel as wronged as I did then after a spelling test he gave us. I can’t remember most of my old teachers, but never forgot him. He gave us a spelling test of people’s last names. I have some family with the last name of Cooke. Mr. Maisano marked it wrong. I told him that was the correct spelling, but he said I was mistaken. I have so many times since then wanted to meet him again to give him my opinion of that test. Funny the things that stick in your memory.
